A mother has recounted how a member of staff 'shamed' her at the supermarket checkout, leaving her in tears.
Samantha, a TikTok user, said she had never felt so ‘judged' after finishing her Tesco shopping this week.
The mom disclosed that she had taken her son Jack, who had been unwell and couldn't eat for most of the week, on a shopping trip.
Every parent knows that when their baby loses their appetite, they will try anything to get them to eat.
So, when Samantha's son Jack grabbed a package of baby food and a yogurt from the trolley, she opened it for him and let him eat.
When she approached the checkout, the person behind the counter was not impressed.
Samantha shared, "I've never experienced such intense judgement from someone in a single moment." And, to be honest, I snapped, and I rarely snap back at people.
So we headed to Tesco to grab a few things. Jack hasn't been feeling well. He hasn't eaten adequately for perhaps a week.
"And I pack snacks with us while we walk around the grocery store. He seemed uninterested in any of the treats I purchased. He was drawn to one of the baby pouches I had placed in the trolley."
Samantha explained that she let Jack consume the pouch as well as a yoghurt that he enjoyed while shopping.
She kept the packaging and handed it to the checkout clerk first so it could be scanned.
She mentioned to me that she didn't want to abandon them in the midst of the shopping.
However, the member of staff was 'disgusted' and threw them away.
"They weren't even finished. I hadn't given them to her to be thrown away. "I handed them to her to be polite so they could be scanned," Samantha explained.
Samantha claims that after describing the problem to the staff member, she began tutting and huffing over the scenario.
"I didn't mean to anger you or irritate you. "I just passed them to you to make sure you could scan them, and I just wanted to let you know that we'd had them on the way around so you understood," Samantha explained.
But when the cashier explained that she didn't think it was 'appropriate' to let youngsters eat from the food shop on their walk around, the mother was devastated.
Samantha explained that the staff member had "pushed her mum button," causing her to burst into tears and tell her, 'I don't really think it is your job to be giving your opinion on what you think." 'My child is seriously ill.'
The mother stated that when the cashier noticed how distraught she was, she issued a 'half apology,' stating that she was sorry her son was sick and that she had been there herself.
Samantha indicated that she intended to take additional action but needed to get to the doctors right away.
Her TikTok followers were divided after she shared her story.
Some expressed sympathy with Samantha, adding, "I always let my son eat on the way round!" Crisps, sandwiches, yogurt, and beverages! He doesn't care; he's content!"
Another person chimed in, saying, "I used to work at Tesco, and they always emphasized the importance of being kind in these types of situations." They reassured everyone that as long as she is honest and pays for it, there shouldn't be a major issue.
Others, on the other hand, were more tolerant of the cashier, with many believing she was completely innocent.
"You are completely wrong," one person wrote. Tesco isn't an unlimited smorgasbord."
"I agree with Tesco on this one," commented another. Especially if you don't have cash on you... if your card is declined and you can't pay, it's absolutely theft. "Pay first, then eat."
