A message to pregnant women — please give the baby your surname. Barrister tweeted.

Why does his surname matter more than yours? Barrister stirs up a storm as she urges all pregnant women to name their babies after them.

A barrister has sparked fierce discussion after persuading pregnant women not to give their children their father's surnames.

Dr Charlotte Proudman, 33, from London, went viral on Twitter this week with her message for pregnant women.

She tweeted: 'A message to pregnant women — please give the baby your surname.

'You carried a baby for 9 months, gave birth, and will be responsible for that child for the rest of your life.'

The barrister, who made headlines in 2015 for challenging a LinkedIn user with a sexist post, said that instead of following tradition, women should think about naming their children after their family.

At the end of the post, she wrote, ‘Why is the father's last name more important than yours when you're registering the baby?’

The tweet sparked fierce debate in the responses - with some claiming that the family surname makes a man 'feel responsible' for his child

Since Charlotte posted the tweet yesterday, it has been shared by more than 1.4 million people, and reactions have been mixed.

One replied: 'Counter-argument:why is the baby's maternal grandfather's surname more important than the baby's father's?

(One responded: 'My husband’s surname became my surname upon marriage. Problem solved.

A Lady Called it "A CHOICE" saying: 'I think it’s my choice what surname I give, rather than feeling some obligation for my maiden surname.'

Dr Proudman made headlines in 2015 when she called out a married lawyer for being sexist after he praised her LinkedIn profile. She said it was her right to call him out because he had praised her stunning' picture. She said he had won the prize for 'best LinkedIn picture' because he had told her 'you definitely won the prize for best LinkedIn picture'.

She went on to say that professionals are using LinkedIn like it's Tinder. She said there are websites for professionals to meet up, so you don't have to use LinkedIn.
