Kissing your child on the lips is a perfectly innocent gesture. While many parents see nothing wrong with it, there are still a large number of people who feel uncomfortable.

David Beckham, for example, has faced criticism for sharing Instagram photos of him and his daughter Harper sharing a kiss.

In 2022, the English soccer star was inundated with comments saying "please don't kiss your daughter" and "now she's a big girl, now it's your turn" after sharing a sweet photo of them walking together.

However, Beckham has defended his approach to showing affection for his children, telling a Facebook Live session in 2017 that "I was brought up very affectionate, and Victoria and I are affectionate with our children."

We want to love our children and be affectionate with them, he said, adding that it wasn't just Harper he kissed on the lips, but all of his children up until they reached adulthood.

"I've been criticized for kissing on the lips with my daughter, but I kiss all my children on the lips," he said. "Brooklyn is 18 now, so he might find it a bit odd."

Dr. Charlotte Reznick, a child and educational psychologist, gave her input on CafeMom's query about when to stop kissing children on the lips. She emphasized that the answer lies within the question itself.

Deciding when to stop giving your children kisses on the lips can be quite perplexing.

She went on to share an example of a 6-year-old daughter whose dad still kissed her on the lips.

Dr. Reznick claims that even though both sides were completely innocent, the girl might attempt to kiss her schoolmates on the lips and unintentionally be labelled as a "sexual harasser".

Once a child reaches the age of four, five, or six, and sexual awareness begins to develop, they may find kissing on the lips to be exciting,” Reznick says.

“Even if a child has never thought about it, it’s just so confusing! If Mommy kisses Dad on the mouth, and Daddy kisses Mommy on the mouth, what does it mean when I kiss my dad on the mouth, a girl or a boy?”

Reznick believes that the appropriate time to stop kissing your children on the lips is now.
