Meet the man who has kept his arm lifted in the air for 50 years for an incredible purpose

X/ Fascinating

Some people commit their lives to peace in the fullest sense of the term in a world full of chaos and violence. Amar Bharati is one such guy from India. He has dedicated himself to the cause of world peace for the past 50 years through an unprecedented and lasting gesture.

Aram Bharati's life story begins in the 1970s. He was a humble man working at a bank in Mumbai, India. He was married with three children. One day, he had an epiphany that would change his life. He decided to abandon his family, his job, and all his friends and become a sadhu (a religious ascetic in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain religions).

In this way, he would give up all worldly pleasures and devote his life to Shiva, Hinduism's most significant deity.

Inspired by his devotion to Shiva and his desire to make the world a better place, in 1973 Amar Bharati came up with an extraordinary gesture.

"Amar Bharati held his right hand high in the air, a gesture he vowed to keep up for the rest of his life," according to "History of Yesterday". This astonishing gesture represented his faith, reverence for Shiva, and fervent wish for peace in a turbulent world. He became known as the “One Armed Baba”.

Bharati’s commitment to peace was matched only by his unyielding dedication. For two long years, he endured excruciating pain holding his hand high without releasing it. The effects of this were far-reaching; his arm lost sensation, his muscles withered away, and what had once been a functional limb was reduced to a skeletal structure and his nails turned into spiral claws.

In India, sadhus, who seek liberation and enlightenment, perform rigorous penances that require extreme self-discipline and dedication. Amar Bharati's penance demonstrates his great dedication.

His message of peace inspired thousands of individuals around the world to take action well beyond India's boundaries and cultures.

What’s even more remarkable is that his commitment inspired many sadhus in India to take up the penance of hand-raising for world peace, but none could match Bharati’s record.

In an exclusive interview with India’s media, Bharati said, “I don’t ask for a lot. What is the point of fighting between ourselves? Why are there so many animosities and hatreds? All Indians should live in peace, and the whole world should live in peace too.”

As he nears the 50th anniversary of his hand-raising for peace, Bharati continues to show no signs of slowing down, even though the years of raising his hand have left him with severely weakened muscles. His dedication to world peace for both physical and spiritual reasons remains unshakable.

Bharatji's tale is an uplifting reminder that the route to peace frequently necessitates significant sacrifice and perseverance. His hand-raising motion remains a beacon of optimism, a reminder of hope, and a message of unification and harmony for all nations in this chaotic world.
