Rumors are swirling that Aya Edebiri could be the next lead in Disney’s ‘pirates’ franchise

Rumors are swirling that Aya Edebiri could be the next lead in Disney’s ‘pirates’ franchise after Johnny Depp was forced to step down from the role after being accused of defamation by his ex-wife Amber Heard.

During the pair’s highly-publicized legal battle in June 2022, which was settled after a jury ruled in Amber Heard’s favor, Disney announced that Depp would be leaving the franchise.

Rumors have circulated that Disney is trying to get Depp to return to the franchise, but he declined to do so.

In response to a question he was asked during the trial, he said “if Disney came to me with 300 million dollars and 100,000 alpacas right now, nothing in the world would make me want to work with them on a Pirates movie again.”

To which he responded, “That is correct.”

In a statement, Depp also discussed his time as Captain Jack Sparrow and his relationship with production company Disney.

"Captain Jack was a character I built from scratch, and I put so much of myself into that character, and I've worked on so many of those films with so many people, and I've put so much of my own writing and dialogue and scenes and jokes into those characters, and whatever they may be," he said.

I can't believe it! After all these years of a great partnership with Disney, I find myself in a situation where I'm being blamed for something I didn't even do.

With Depp's career coming to an end, many wondered who would replace him as the beloved Jack. At first, it seemed to be Margot Robbie.

In 2020, The Hollywood Reporter reported that she was working with Christina Hodson on a new chapter of the Pirates franchise, though the project seemed to be slowing down after a couple of months.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he said: "For a long time, we had this idea and we wanted it to be more female-led, not entirely female-led, but just a kind of story that we thought would be really cool.”

He added that Disney “probably doesn’t want” to do it, but that “we believe we can get it made”.

He also told The Sun that Disney “is alive for me” and that “I think she was disappointed that it didn't go first or maybe because she was really busy, so maybe it would be a blessing for us to push it a little bit.”

"It's a very powerful story,” he said.

Meanwhile, it looks like Aya Edebiri may be the next in line to star in Pirates 6, according to multiple reports by The Hollywood Handle, News.com, and The Sun.

According to the news outlet, The Bear star is being considered for the role of Anne, a pirate based on the real-life character.

No official confirmation has been made yet, but we hope this rumor is true!
