Vegans support a mom and her son after he was bullied at school for having a vegan birthday party.
Angel Craine, a vegan since 2022, is passionate about giving her children the opportunity to choose their own eating habits.
Last year, Malachi, four, decided to celebrate his fourth birthday with a Pokemon-themed party, but as the day approached, his classmates did not RSVP.
Angel told 7News that she was shocked to find out that her son had been bullied at school because he chose to have a vegan birthday cake, which was dairy-free.
"They told him they wouldn't come if he didn't have cow's milk in it," she said, "I can't believe kids his age are already bullying vegans."
His mother, Angel, said she was heartbroken that her son had been so ostracised by his peers.
"He's been coming home every day saying the kids aren't being nice to him," she said. "I'm really overwhelmed by how compassionate the vegan community has been."
Angel decided to share her son's story on the Facebook group Vegans in Australia and asked if anyone in the northside of Brisbane had vegan children who would like to attend his fifth birthday party.
"My 4-year-old is being bullied a lot because he's vegan," she wrote, "so I was wondering if anyone would be willing to come to his birthday party."
Angel received an incredible amount of support for his post, as 12 members of the group pledged to attend.
She said that he's always enthusiastic about making new friends and he's truly looking forward to his birthday.
Furthermore, the mom shared her admiration for her son's resilience, saying, "I'm incredibly proud of my son for not letting bullying get to him and for staying committed to veganism and animal welfare."
Regardless of our individual choices and tastes, it's important that no child ever feels left out.
