A woman in Brazil has given birth to a 2ft tall baby weighing more than 16lb.
According to The Mirror, the baby, named Angerson Santos, was born in hospital Padre Colombo, Parintins, on January 18th.
According to the hospital, the infant was born via Caesarean section and is now in stable condition with no defects.
According to the Brazilian daily El Globo, Angerson is the heaviest infant ever born in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, breaking the previous record of 6.74 kg.
Pedro Aluizio was born in 2014 in Parintins and weighed in at 14lb 8oz and measured 57 centimetres.
The newborn is more than twice the average size of a baby, and the clothes she and her partner bought for him don't fit, so the hospital has started a fundraiser to cover all their costs.
The hospital is also looking for community donations, such as extra-large nappies and clothing for babies aged 9 to 12 months.
Cleidiane thanked the hospital personnel for their continued care and support after giving birth to her son, adding, "I want to thank the team at Padre colombo Hospital." They have given me strength and treated me very well since I arrived here. I don’t know what would have happened to me if it wasn’t for them. I really appreciate each one of them,” she said.
In the United States, the average full-term baby is born weighing 6 to 9 lbs.
A study that was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology states that a higher birth weight "may complicate [the] birth of the baby" and can have detrimental effects on the infant's health.
Despite his unusual birth weight, Anderson is not the world’s heaviest baby. According to the Guinness World Records, the world's biggest baby was a boy born in 1955 to a healthy mother in the Italian town of Aversa. The baby weighed in at 22lbs, 8oz.
