"It's because even with one drink, like, if I had a Martini tonight, I would be at half-mast tomorrow," she said when she gave her explanation at the time.

Now, it wasn't the case when I was younger. However, I believe that alcohol has a different effect on people as they age. And there are only so many tomorrows left in me. For none of them, I wish to be at half mast."

Fonda did, however, recently make some controversial remarks on the internet when she revealed what she would need in a partner.

When the subject of dating came up during Fonda's appearance on comedian Heather McMahan's podcast Absolutely Not, the actor confessed, saying, "I'm ashamed to say this, but if I were to take a lover, he'd have to be 20."

Then McMahan asked, "Really? "Now, why specifically 20?" Fonda asked. "The reason is I just don't like old skin," she answered. The host and production team couldn't stop laughing at her response, so she said, "I don't!"

Although she most likely intended for her remarks to be humorous, fans swiftly swamped the page with their reactions.

"I understand the old skin part, but we can go higher than 20 to still accomplish that," one person said in response to another. "What about if the 20-year-old doesn't like old skin?"

One more commenter said: "20? Another person said, "Jane noooooooo. I think 20 is too young for my age, and I'm not even half her age." Like really but noooooo," said one, while another said, "That's just not right.

Others who supported the actress wrote: "You guys don't know that Jane Fonda makes jokes around? tough in these comments," commented one, while a third said, "You guys aren't going to attempt and cancel Jane, please. She's just being amusing."

Fans responded: "Y’all really can’t take a joke in these comments," "It seems like nobody knows what a joke is! She's hilarious," and "I really believe that this is just her sense of humor, everyone." Not that serious, really.

Some pointed out that if an 85-year-old guy made the same joke about a woman, it wouldn't be taken seriously.

In addition to shunning males who were either her own age or marginally younger, Fonda had previously declared earlier in the year that she was quitting alcohol..." It's because, even after just one drink, I would be at half-mast tomorrow if I had a Martini tonight," she remarked at the time.

But when I was younger, that was not true. However, I believe that alcohol has a different effect on people as they age. And there are only so many tomorrows left in me. For none of them, I wish to be at half mast."
